Artist Bio

Melanie Mills creates politically motivated sculpture and collage. Mills has exhibited in galleries, museums and arts centers in juried and invitational shows throughout the US since the 1980’s in solo, 3-person and group shows. Additionally, she has been an arts writer, arts board member, graphic designer, and curator.

Growing up in a period when desegregation in the South had begun, her earliest memory was at 3 years old of a motorcade of President Eisenhower in Houston, TX. Both experiences have contributed to her lifelong interest in politics.

She has lived throughout the US, but was particularly inspired living in New Mexico, where she embraced the landscape, artist culture, and Latin religious imagery. She earned a BFA in sculpture from University of New Mexico, and later, a Master’s degree in Art Therapy and Counseling Psychology. For 30 years, Mills has practiced psychotherapy, and introduced clients to art as a powerful medium for self-reflection, insight and transformation.

Mills currently lives in Savannah, GA, working as a licensed Psychotherapist, Addictions Counselor, and Art Therapist in private practice. Living in Georgia affords her a front row seat to observe some of the most salient political, racial and cultural issues currently facing our country.
